What to wear, whatever the weather

OK, it’s still a little sunny, but this time of year is a nightmare when it comes to knowing what to wear.

The weather blows hot and cold more frequently than a tempestuous relationship – one minute we think we’re finally having the Indian summer we were promised, and the next we’re wrapping up in chunky knits and winter boots as the ice-cold wind threatens to give us frostbite.

It’s easy to know what to wear in the summer: a pair of shorts and a t-shirt tend to do the trick. But come October, we feel like we need to haul around our entire wardrobe to prepare for any eventuality the sky decides to throw at us.

When the weather is grey, anything could happen: it could mean a light drizzle, it could be that the heavens will open, or it could just be a rather gloomy day. Whatever it decides to do, bring it on! So, in light (or should we say, dark) of that, we have put together some top tips for grey weather attire:

Forest-Segway-Go-ApeGo bright or go home

When the sky is looking bleak, the last thing you want to do is camouflage with it by wearing grey yourself. Summer is over, but that doesn’t mean you have to say no to neon! Bright and bold gear is all the rage at the moment, and when you’re swinging through the tree tops at Go Ape, you’ll appreciate being able to spot your chums from a distance. It’s always wise to invest in the odd high-vis garment, as you can wear them for all your future outdoor pursuits.

Don’t forget your waterproofs

Just because it’s not raining when you leave the house doesn’t mean there won’t be a downpour at some point in the day! With so many lightweight, packable waterproofs around these days, you can easily fit a mac into your bag. Trust us, it could come in handy!

Embrace the layers

Remember: you can take away, but if you don’t pack them with you – you can’t add! It’s best to start the day with plenty of layers: perhaps a vest, a long-sleeved t-shirt, a fleece and a body-warmer – and then peel off the garments as you get warmer. When you visit Go Ape, you should get nice and toasty quickly; without realising you’re exercising, you’ll be burning anything from 500 to 700 calories – all that crawling, swinging, climbing and hollering sure works up a sweat!

Look after your fingers

Gloves are always a good idea in the autumn/winter months – they protect your hands from the elements, they can stylishly match with your hat/scarf ensemble and, when tackling the high ropes at Go Ape, they will really protect your hands. Don’t worry if you forget them though – we sell them in the cabin.

Dress your feet sensibly

Now this is an important one: whatever the weather (even if it’s sunny!), you should always wear closed-toe, flat footwear with a good grip. If we were you, we’d go for ankle-supporting boots. Definite no-nos are sandals, flip-flops, or any kind of slip-off shoe. And leave the stilettos at home!

Luckily, Go Ape is the perfect wet weather activity! Our 28 courses are open in all conditions, with the exception of lightening, storms, high winds and ice (for obvious reasons!). A bit of rain never hurt anyone – although it makes the course slightly muddier than usual, this just adds to the fun!

Say “NO!” to routine

Family Forest Segway

They say us humans are creatures of habit; but we disagree. We like to think we’re all, in fact, creatures of adventure.

We know, we know; there are some things that we can’t escape doing on a daily basis: brushing our teeth, burning our toast, running for the bus (OK, maybe that’s just us). But here at Go Ape we’re firm believers in adding a little spice to our lives – a bit of variety, a bit of diversity. Yes, we actually like to be kept on our toes!

If you’ve been feeling like you’re stuck in something of a routine rut of late – fear not. It’s your life, so make the necessary changes in order to feel inspired, invigorated and motivated. No-one wants to feel like a hamster trapped on a spinning wheel, so here’s how to say NO to routine and embrace the big adventure that is life…

Experiment with your style

It sounds obvious, but when you feel good on the outside, you’ll feel good on the inside, too. If you’ve had the same hairstyle for the last decade, how about going for something more daring next time you visit the salon? Similarly, rather than going for the trusty jeans that you already own in eight other virtually-identical colours, could the new season be the time to experiment with your style?

Meet new people

Sometimes, you may find yourself surrounded by the same folk – day in, day out. While you love them dearly, it’s always good to meet new people – people who can teach you new things and inspire you in different ways. Get out there, spark up conversations and chat to like-minded individuals (and even non-like-minded individuals). Who knows? Your new BFF could be just around the corner.

Try new foods

It’s so easy to get stuck in a food rut – making the same meals week-on-week in rotation. This week, though, try cooking something you’ve never made before. Make ‘Spag Bol Wednesdays’ a thing of the past. Be unpredictable. Ask friends to share their favourite recipes or look online for inspiration. Trust us, you’ll have fun making – and eating – something new.

Set goals

Don’t try to change every aspect of your life overnight. This would be an incredibly daunting task for the best of us! Instead, write down a series of realistic goals; whether it’s to learn a new language, try a new hobby, get a promotion at work or to have some more “me” time. When goals are broken down into chunks, they seem much more manageable.

Live life Adventurously

The question is: how? Well, one way to feel invigorated, refreshed and raring to go is by tackling the high ropes or exploring the forest on Segways here at Go Ape. Unleash your inner Tarzan, be spontaneous, throw caution to the wind (literally) and join us for a thrilling day at Go Ape.

The countdown is on…

Go Ape Seasons

It brings a tear to our eyes just thinking about it – waving farewell to what’s been a tree-mendous season here at Go Ape.

We’re sure going to miss swinging through the trees and Segway-ing through the forest with you all. Just what are we going to do with ourselves?!

…Woah, hang on a minute! Yes, the season might be drawing to a close, but as the Klaxons sang, it’s not over yet!

Our forest doors will be shutting at the start of December, which means we’ve still got a month and a half left of monkeying around in the tree-tops and hanging out with you.

October’s an odd month. The weather can’t make up its mind and that makes choosing appropriate attire quite difficult. Is it still acceptable to don our sunnies, or is it time we unearthed our winter warmers from the back of our wardrobes?

One thing you can guarantee in October is a splashing of rain and dipping temperatures. But, that should by no means stop you from embracing the great outdoors! Did you know that Go Ape is a perfect all-weather activity, come wind, rain, hail or shine (we draw the line at thunderstorms, for obvious reasons)? Here’s why Go Ape is great, whatever the weather:

Trees = umbrella

You might think you’re exposed to the elements being 30 feet up in the air, but the tree-top canopy does a really good job of keeping you sheltered. Mind you, if it’s raining, then expect some spray in the face as you make a descent from the trees via zip line.

Embrace the breeze

Tackling one of our tree-top obstacles courses is hard graft. You can expect to burn around 500-700 calories and you’ll definitely work up a sweat. If the sun is beating down on you things can get very sweaty and sticky so actually, a nice breeze and/or a cooler day is always welcome!

Go Ape Instructors Are WaterproofRain makes it more fun

We’ve spoken to many customers who have told us that rain has made their Go Ape experience more fun! Slippery obstacles might be more challenging, but they also mean more laughs for you and your mates as you watch one another try to cross them!

Nothing beats a crisp autumn’s day

Our forests are most beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves on the trees turn from green to rich reds and burnt oranges. It’s the perfect time to wrap up warm for a crisp autumn’s walk, followed by some hang time in the trees at Go Ape!

Our skin is waterproof!

A little bit of rain never hurt anyone! So long as you kit yourself out in the appropriate gear (jumpers, sturdy shoes, windproof/waterproof clothing, etc.) you’ll be well-protected from the elements whilst up in the trees. If you arrive at the forest and realise you’ve come under-prepared, just head over to the cabin and take a pick from our Gorilla Gear; we’ve got everything from beanies and gloves to beck tubes and hoodies!

So, what are you waiting for? Book your next session now and see the season out in style.

Win with Muddy Puddles

Muddy Puddles is built on the proposition that there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong kit!

Muddy Puddles was started by a farmer whose children loved getting muddy. One day she lay the smallest one down on the kitchen table, drew round him and made the first all-in-one waterproof suit.

We’ve been kitting out young adventurers for over 20 years in waterproofs, wellies and ski-wear, enabling them to stay warm, dry and happy whatever the weather.

Playing outdoors leads to bigger imaginations, better concentration, healthier bodies and amazing memories.

Muddy Puddles has placed playing outdoors at the forefront of childhood once again. We make durable, practical and protective outerwear, and firmly believe in the benefits of outdoor learning.

We’re proud to supply waterproofs to over 1,000 schools and nurseries, and host free outdoor events for families in and around London. We also support Farms for City Children to ensure kids are warm and dry when they come to stay on the farms.
