Alternative stag do ideas? We’ve got you covered

Stag and Hen Do

‘What goes on tour stays on tour.’

Aah yes, the familiar stag do mantra. It roughly translates as: do what you like lads, safe in the knowledge that you won’t get found out.

But it’s also an expression based on the idea that every stag do is a raucous, loutish affair when in actual fact, stag dos are changing. The cliched stag party‚ one fuelled by booze, strippers and fancy dress‚ is on its way out, being replaced by an altogether more refined, less rowdy affair.

That’s not to say that the thought of hanging out in bars and clubs doesn’t appeal to today’s grooms-to-be and their mates. But as men begin to marry later in life, the traditional stag do (and its associated hangover-from-hell) has lost the charm it once had. Of course, the stag do remains a rite of passage, so the pressure is on to make it a day/ night/weekend/week to remember.

The only difference is that these days, the stags want it to be memorable for all the right reasons. And this is where Go Ape comes in. This outdoor adventure makes for the perfect alternative stag do, don’t you think? It’s raucous (in a good way), exciting (without any cringe-worthy consequences), and it’s a great way for mates to bond (bring on those bromances, lads).

Admittedly, we’re biased, but we honestly can’t think of any other way we’d rather celebrate a mate’s ‘last hours of freedom’ than swinging from the treetops.

Let’s look at what you get from a Go Ape stag party…

1. First up, it’s a great laugh. What could be more fun than you and your mates tackling high ropes, zip wires and elevated tunnels or whizzing through the forest on a Segway?
2. As an added bonus there’s also the endless pix you’ll get to fill friends’ social media feeds. Photos and videos of the groom having the time of his life (or even better, suffering an epic fail) will keep you amused for hours. What goes on tour may well stay on tour, but with this much fun you’ll definitely want to share…
3. Go Ape is the ultimate combination of adventure and male bonding. One part team building and two parts adrenalin, it will definitely make for a stag do to remember.
4. And just because Go Ape is unlike your average stag party, that doesn’t mean you have to do away with every tradition. While booze and strippers are out, fancy dress is still very much an option. Because if you’re going to be swinging from the treetops and flying through the air, why wouldn’t you be dressed as Tarzan, Superman, or a gorilla? And the fun needn’t end once your time at Go Ape is up.

Take your pick from the many cottages, campsites, yurts, log cabins, B&Bs, and holiday boats located near our various sites. You could even continue the theme and hire a treehouse (or four) for the weekend.

So if the idea of staggering through town dressed as a beer bottle, being barred from every club, and spending hundreds of pounds on a round isn’t for you, there is an alternative…

Fancy dress…we’re impressed!

Go-Ape-Gorillas

Love to dress up? We certainly do!

If you visit Go Ape and spot a gorilla roaming the forest floor, run for your life! No, don’t really. The great ape is no great ape at all – just one of the Go Ape tribe monkeying (or shall we say, ape-ing?) around!

Our Tree Top Adventure courses are tonnes of fun (if we do say so ourselves). But do you know what makes them even more fun? Fancy dress!

Provided your clobber lets you easily navigate the obstacles, we strongly encourage rocking up to the forest dressed to impress. And if you’re visiting us to celebrate a birthday, stag or hen do, donning fancy dress will make your experience even more memorable!

Sound good? Here are some snaps to inspire you…

These lads and ladies are looking particularly spectacular in Alice in Wonderland attire. Our gorilla pal gives his seal of approval, too. Fancy dress 2

A marvellous mixture of brightly-coloured costumes. These comic book heroes and villains look awesome – just imagine their capes flapping in the wind as they soar through the air via zip wire!

Fancy dress 3

Spiderman in action – and looking ultra-confident as he confronts the stirrups, one of Go Ape’s trickiest obstacles. But hey, it’s Spiderman; he could probably do it blindfolded (now that’s something we’d like to see!).

Fancy dress 4

Hurrah! Looks like Little Bo Peep has found her sheep who went walkabouts in the treetops! Baa-d sheep!

These are just a few fancy dress ideas to get you started – the possibilities really are endless! Come dressed as your favourite animal, singer, or movie character. Dress like the birthday girl or boy; or challenge one another to scour charity shops and buy the most outlandish outfits you can find. Just make sure you wear shoes suitable for trailblazing and canopy exploring!

Oh, and one more thing: make sure you take lots of pictures of you and your tribe in get-up! It’ll give you all a sacred memento to stick on the fridge door and remind you of your Go Ape adventure! And if you do take lots of snaps, don’t forget to share them with us via our social channels – who knows, you may help to inspire the next stag, hen or birthday bunch that swings with us!

Stag and hen dos at Go Ape

Stag and Hen Do

Has your best mate recently announced that they’re tying the knot, and you’ve been landed with the task of organising their stag or hen do?

No pressure or anything, but this will probably be your best bud’s last blowout before their big day. So naturally, you’ll want to please the bride- or groom-to-be by making it a trip to remember… for all the right reasons!

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure, here’s an idea: round up your best (pri)mates and come swing through the trees at Go Ape!

If you’ve never unleashed your inner Tarzan on a Tree Top Adventure before, expect 2-3 hours of trailblazing and canopy exploring as you and your tribe take on a whole host of sky-high obstacles. We’ve got rope ladders, bridges, tunnels, stirrups, swings, nets, zip wires…we’ve got it all!

We guarantee that your adventure will be far more memorable than a trip into town in fancy dress! Oh, and on the subject of fancy dress, we strongly encourage stag and hen parties to arrive at the forest in costume – here are some ideas for themes:

Superheroes

Batman, Wolverine, Wonder Woman, Spider Man, Flash, Catwoman…there’s an (almost) endless list of superheroes you could dress as! And you’ll all look pretty fly when you leap off the Tarzan Swing with your capes flapping in the wind.

1970s Disco

Party in the tree tops donning disco gear; big ‘fros, big flares, leg warmers and bold, psychedelic prints! D-I-S-C-O!

Cartoon characters

Hen DoTransform into one of your favourite cartoon characters! Buzz Lightyear? Marge Simpson? Elmo?!

Harry Potter

Put a spell on the tree tops dressed head-to-toe in wizard clobber; robes, hats, wands, the lot! The bride- or groom-to-be gets to be Harry, just don’t forget the glasses.

Animals

Dress up as your favourite animal, whether that’s a cow, lion, monkey (the obvious choice!), parrot or panda! If one of your tribe takes too long to complete an obstacle, their forfeit is to make the noise of their chosen animal as loud as they can.

Charity shop

Everyone in your group has to buy the cheapest, yet smartest outfit they can from a local charity shop (accessories too). Make sure you all choose something ‘extra special’ for the bride- or groom-to-be.

When deciding on a theme, remember that you all need to be able to swing from tree to tree (which means dressing like Sponge Bob is a little impractical). You’ll obviously want to take a few snaps of your tribe too, and you can take a camera into the trees so long as it’s attached to you with a lanyard. One of the Go Ape tribe will be more than happy to take a group photo when you’ve all completed your adventure!
