Rewards for your school children.

GROUP OF SCHOOL KIDS WITH GORILLA ALEXANDRA PALACE

As any teacher knows, rewarding your tribe for a job well done, whether that involves academic achievement, excellent behaviour or attempting something they initially found daunting is a helpful tactic to keep motivation sky high. A juicy dangling carrot at the end of an arduous task can provide just the boost a student might need in order to pull their best efforts out of the bag!

Getting to know your tribe

The key to choosing the right rewards to offer your class is to remember that each little monkey is an individual with their own unique personality. For the greatest chance of your reward system working, you want to have a variety of rewards to pull into play that suit the different personality types of your tribe. After all, variety is the spice of life!

Whilst it’s impossible to stick students into neat little categories, the acclaimed Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality test can suggest whether a student is more of an extrovert or an introvert in the way they focus their attention and get their energy. This can help you choose the rewards they might respond best to.

Extroverts have more of a tendency to gain an energy boost from interaction with the world around them, focus on making connections with others, prefer to learn through actions, and can feel drained by spending too much time alone.

Introverts may prefer to boost their energy from within,“ from their own ideas, thoughts and feelings. They may feel drained by too much time spent around others, prefer to focus on fostering a few close friendships, and may like to learn through observations.

Rewards which might match

In the moment€™ rewards such as public praise in the classroom or displaying the student’€™s name on a poster as €˜student of the week€™ might appeal to the more extroverted amongst your clan, those who are happy to step into the limelight and enjoy their chance to shine! They might also respond well to formal assemblies where they can receive certificates and enjoy the applause.

In comparison, the more introverted student might die a little inside at the idea of all those eyes watching them receive their award. Token rewards that represent value such as house points that contribute towards a greater prize, or individual points that could be traded in for rewards such as free time, might be a better idea.

Go Ape for schools

Of course, one of the most memorable rewards you can offer your students is the opportunity to try something new, and our adventurous school trip packages at Go Ape offer the chance to do just that! We offer both primary and senior school packages at affordable prices and our range of activities will appeal to a wide variety of students, from those happy to quietly swing their way through the treetops, soaking up the scenery of the great outdoors, to those who want all eyes on them as they let out their loudest Tarzan yell and leap from one of our high platforms!

We welcome our 7,000,000th customer!

Seven Millionth
Fellow tribesmen and tribeswomen, we’€™ve done it! We’™ve only gone and welcomed our 7,000,000th (yep, seven millionth) Go Ape customer!

To think a€“ in 15 years, seven million people from across the UK and beyond have visited our leafy hideouts. Seven million people have swung through the treetops, whizzed through the air on zip wires and rolled around the floor on our Forest Segways. Seven million people have chosen to Go Ape and live life adventurously. In fact, we actually feel a little emotional about it!

How we celebrated

Of course, this mammoth millionth milestone certainly deserved a celebration€“ and celebrate we did!

We surprised three lovely ladies visiting Go Ape Cannock, as they embarked on a Forest Segway Experience. Unsuspectingly, they completed their forest-themed adventure wearing helmets with three 7,000,000th customer tickets sneakily planted inside of them.

We secretly set our video cams to €˜record€™ and filmed Jane, Julie and Jane turning up to Go Ape. We followed them with our cams as they cruised around the forest floor, hiding behind tree trunks so we didn’t get caught out!

Then, as they rolled back to base, stepped off the Segways and removed their helmets. SURPRISE! Cue the music, party hats, bananas, gorillas, singing, dancing and huge celebratory certificates! You could say the three Js were rather taken aback!

After the buzz died down and we explained to Jane, Julie and Jane why they were receiving the extra-special treatment, we got to find out more about the ladies. They know one another through their husbands who work together (along with one of the Janes).

The ladies occasionally organise a girls’€™ day out and, upon their arrival at Cannock, told one of our tribe that they’™d decided they wanted to do more adventure-filled things together. One of the Janes referred to herself as ‘the Segway expert€™ after rolling around multiple times on the self-balancing machines (including at Go Ape Cannock). We can second that after witnessing her skills whilst filming them on the forest floor!

The ladies had enjoyed a leisurely stroll before the roll and said that they were delighted with being surprised! As an extra thanks for helping us to reach the milestone, we gave Jane, Julie and Jane a hamper packed with merchandise and gift vouchers – so they can come and enjoy another adventure-filled girls’€™ day out with us again in the not-too-distant future!

So, we’€™ve got to say a huge thanks€™ to Jane, Julie and Jane! Thanks as well to all of our lovely, loyal Go Ape-rs who have helped us to reach the seven million mark. Thanks for living life adventurously and for being advocates of our forest-themed adventures!

Here’€™s to the next seven million visitors!

Head to the trees for The Big Canopy Campout!

Big Canopy Campout Blog
Adventurists, explorers, climbers, Go Ape-rs’€ anyone who (like us) shares a burning passion for the wonderful wild world a€“ put the 24th of June in your diaries.

Why? Because it’€™s The Big Canopy Campout!

On the eve of the 24th, canopy and climbing communities across the world will unite to spend the night pitched-up in the treetops, underneath the stars (our idea of heaven). The campout will raise money to help the World Land Trust (WLT) purchase and protect critically threatened rainforest in Borneo.

If you’€™ve never heard of the WLT, it’€™s a charity focused on rainforest conservation with over 20 years of experience carrying out successful environmental projects.

Sir David Attenborough said: €œThe money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of.

Each expert troop around the world will share pics, vids and experiences of their canopy camps on social media and on The Big Canopy Campout website. They’€™ll be monitored from dusk until dawn, helping us to learn about the unique life and environment of every forest.

Get involved!

Now, we can’€™t let all the pros have all the fun, can we? The Big Canopy Campout is calling out to YOU to get involved! It wants YOU to join in and celebrate rainforests and help protect the canopy through adventure!

Chances are, you may not have the skills, experience or equipment needed to rig a tent in the treetops (if you do, then climb away!). But you can still set-up camp on the ground, whether it’s in woodland, or in your own back garden with your family or buddies. You might not be treated to the same awe-inspiring views from the floor, but the experience will be just as exciting!

As the event website explains, it doesn’t matter where you end up camping, but it would be great if it was somewhere with a story; somewhere perfectly picturesque and where you’re surrounded by forest life.

If you like, you can fundraise for The Big Canopy Campout“ or, just sharing your experiences on social media using the hashtag #TheBigCanopyCampout will help to spread the word and raise much-needed awareness about this awesome cause!

The Go Ape tribe will certainly be joining in the fun in any way we can. We spend most of our time in the canopy; and although we’€™re pros (if we do say so ourselves) at treetop obstacle courses, we€’re not as skilled at pitching up a tent in the treetops. So, we think we’€™ll be setting up base on the forest floor!

Up for it? Of course you are! Join like-minded adventurists across the globe, all united by their shared love of forests! We hope to see you in the trees (or in amidst the trees) very soon!

How are those stories coming along?

KIds Writing Competition
Been on any awesome adventures recently? If you’€™re a mini Tarzan aged 4-12, then we want to hear all about them!

Maybe you built your first-ever forest den, held a campout in your back garden with your best buddies, or found fossils on a local beach. Perhaps you tried rock climbing for the very first time, hiked to a peak with your parents, or discovered treasure during a geocache trip.

Small or big, scary or exciting (or both), we’€™re asking you to help spread the love for adventure by sharing your story with us and the world!

Your story can be anywhere from 100 to 500 words. Share as many details as you can! What time did you get up? What was the weather like on the day? How were you feeling before the adventure? What did your parents say when you conquered the activity?

The more info, the better, as it’€™ll help us to feel how you were feeling during your adventure. It’€™ll help us to relive it!

Can’€™t think of an inspiring adventure off the top of your head? Make one up! Get those creative juices flowing and write about an awesome adventure that you’€™d love to go on in the future, or a story about an adventure someone you know has embarked on. Ask your parents or grandparents a€“ they may be able to tell you a tale or two!

There are no rules to this competition a the only thing we ask is for your stories to be as adventure-filled as possible. We want to read stories that, by the end, will leave us itching to go on an adventure of our own!

As well as helping to inspire the world to live life more adventurously, you’ll be in with a chance of winning some awesome prizes. We’€™re giving away heaps of adventure books, but also, lucky winners will get the chance to clamber into the canopy to take on one of our tree-mendous Tree Top Junior courses! They won’t be alone, though: they get to choose whether they take their school tribe, or their best buddies for a birthday bash like no other!

The competition closes at midnight, 22nd June. You can submit your entry through a form on the website, or by scanning a copy and sending it to [email protected] with the subject line €’Writing competition’
