Striking the balance: The workings of a Segway

Group Segway

At first glance, Segways might not seem all that extraordinary, with some people describing them as mere ‘glorified scooters.’ But in actual fact, Segways are ingenious pieces of kit and a lot of science goes into developing them.

Packed away in the base, hidden from view, are clever computers, sophisticated sensors and smart motors which keep the Segway upright when it’s switched on. As for the controls and navigation, well, that’s down to you…the rider!

Successfully operating a Segway involves mastering the art of balance tightrope walkers do it, ballerinas do it; and if you’ve ever embarked on a Tree Top Adventure at Go Ape, you’ve had to do it! As the saying goes, it’s simple once you know how!

Lean forward (not too much, now) and the clever gyroscopic sensors within the Segway pick up changes in pitch angle and, as a result, move the wheels forward to maintain balance. The same goes if you need to reverse; i.e., if you overshot a forest trail at Go Ape and find yourself a little too close to a tree (*gulp*)!

Of course, as well as going backwards and forwards, you’ll want to navigate left and right which is done by moving the handlebar in the desired direction. When travelling forward, leaning forward will pick up the pace and if you start going a bit too fast for your liking, just lean back! Segway with Go Ape!

Now you know all about the tech behind Segways, do you fancy having a go on one? If the answer’s ‘yes,’ then why not pay a visit to Go Ape for a totally unique, forest-themed Segway adventure?

Go Ape Segway Experience

When it comes to cruising around on a self-balancing Segway, there really is no better setting than in the heart of a beautiful forest. Immersed in a sea of green, you’ll weave your way in and out of the trees with your tribe, listening to the birds chirping, breathing in that fresh forest air while watching numerous species of wildlife go about their merry way.

A Forest Segway experience is a fun-for-all activity. If you aren’t a fan of heights, or have swung with us so many times you’ve lost count, it provides a good alternative to a Tree Top Adventure (though, we also recommend facing up to your fears by heading into the canopy).

Or, you might choose to treat yourself and your tribe to the ultimate Go Ape day out by combining both adventures go on, you deserve it!Worried you won’t be able to balance? Worry no more! Before we let you roam free in the forest, a skilled member of the Go Ape tribe will teach you the tricks and make sure you’ve nailed the controls.

A Segway experience costs just £35 for 60 minutes, and is the perfect chance to put your feet up and explore the wonders of the forest in a fun and totally unique way!

Get Ahead This Spring Bank Holiday

Tree Top Junior Southampton

Bank holiday season is upon US!

We’ve already been treated to three bank holidays recently thanks to Easter, and May Day and before we know it Spring Bank Holiday will be upon us and then we have to wait until August for another!

Have you penciled your plans into the diary yet, or does it leave a Monday-shaped hole in your calendar? After three you should be well rehearsed but fear not its not too late to take the time to start making preparations‚ take a look at these handy tips for making the most of your long weekend!

Write a list

A bank holiday means you have 50% more time to do the things you’ve been nagging yourself to do, but haven’t got around to. There’s nothing more satisfying than striking a line through that dreaded chore you’ve been putting off for ages. Once it’s done, it’s done, and you can enjoy the rest of your extended weekend guilt-free. Tidy the shed‚ tick! Take that old bookcase to the dump‚ tick! Practice your chest-pounding skills‚ okay, maybe that one’s just us…

What’s on the menu?

Life can get so hectic that sometimes, eating becomes a necessity rather than an indulgence. This is a travesty in our opinion! Why not plan ahead for the upcoming bank holiday by considering what treats you could have in store? The range of ideas out there these days are vast, and vloggers are making recipes even easier to achieve. For the more health-conscious, these goodies needn’t be high in naughtiness, as long as they are something you can look forward to! So start favouriting those online tutorials you usually scroll past longingly, sighing that you’d “love to try this out but never have the time…” Well, now you will!

Money-maker

Why not use your extra time to declutter your home, and at the same time, make some extra pocket money? Start gathering your preloved particulars ready for that bank holiday boot sale/auctioning website/free ads forum and watch your finances flourish. Perhaps your little monkeys have a mountain of toys they don’t play with anymore? Maybe your wardrobe could use a clear-out? One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, after all.

Plot in time with your loved ones

It may seem like an obvious one, but if your lives are half as busy as ours, you’ll know that time is precious and we must grab the opportunities to spend time with our family and friends as often as we can. Eat together, play together, take a walk in your local park‚ anything that brings you closer and allows you to spend some quality time with one another. So book in some bank holiday bonding time with your favourites today, before anyone else does!

For a truly great experience with your nearest and dearest, a trip to Go Ape could be just the ticket! There are just a few days left until the Early May Bank Holiday‚ so make sure you get in early by booking a session at one of our fantastic Tree Top Adventure courses. Make this year’s Spring Bank Holiday the most memorable yet!

Alternative stag do ideas? We’ve got you covered

Stag and Hen Do

‘What goes on tour stays on tour.’

Aah yes, the familiar stag do mantra. It roughly translates as: do what you like lads, safe in the knowledge that you won’t get found out.

But it’s also an expression based on the idea that every stag do is a raucous, loutish affair when in actual fact, stag dos are changing. The cliched stag party‚ one fuelled by booze, strippers and fancy dress‚ is on its way out, being replaced by an altogether more refined, less rowdy affair.

That’s not to say that the thought of hanging out in bars and clubs doesn’t appeal to today’s grooms-to-be and their mates. But as men begin to marry later in life, the traditional stag do (and its associated hangover-from-hell) has lost the charm it once had. Of course, the stag do remains a rite of passage, so the pressure is on to make it a day/ night/weekend/week to remember.

The only difference is that these days, the stags want it to be memorable for all the right reasons. And this is where Go Ape comes in. This outdoor adventure makes for the perfect alternative stag do, don’t you think? It’s raucous (in a good way), exciting (without any cringe-worthy consequences), and it’s a great way for mates to bond (bring on those bromances, lads).

Admittedly, we’re biased, but we honestly can’t think of any other way we’d rather celebrate a mate’s ‘last hours of freedom’ than swinging from the treetops.

Fancy dress 1

Let’s look at what you get from a Go Ape stag party…

1. First up, it’s a great laugh. What could be more fun than you and your mates tackling high ropes, zip wires and elevated tunnels or whizzing through the forest on a Segway?
2. As an added bonus there’s also the endless pix you’ll get to fill friends’ social media feeds. Photos and videos of the groom having the time of his life (or even better, suffering an epic fail) will keep you amused for hours. What goes on tour may well stay on tour, but with this much fun you’ll definitely want to share…
3. Go Ape is the ultimate combination of adventure and male bonding. One part team building and two parts adrenalin, it will definitely make for a stag do to remember.
4. And just because Go Ape is unlike your average stag party, that doesn’t mean you have to do away with every tradition. While booze and strippers are out, fancy dress is still very much an option. Because if you’re going to be swinging from the treetops and flying through the air, why wouldn’t you be dressed as Tarzan, Superman, or a gorilla? And the fun needn’t end once your time at Go Ape is up.

Take your pick from the many cottages, campsites, yurts, log cabins, B&Bs, and holiday boats located near our various sites. You could even continue the theme and hire a treehouse (or four) for the weekend.

So if the idea of staggering through town dressed as a beer bottle, being barred from every club, and spending hundreds of pounds on a round isn’t for you, there is an alternative…
