Head to the trees for The Big Canopy Campout!

Big Canopy Campout Blog
Adventurists, explorers, climbers, Go Ape-rs’€ anyone who (like us) shares a burning passion for the wonderful wild world a€“ put the 24th of June in your diaries.

Why? Because it’€™s The Big Canopy Campout!

On the eve of the 24th, canopy and climbing communities across the world will unite to spend the night pitched-up in the treetops, underneath the stars (our idea of heaven). The campout will raise money to help the World Land Trust (WLT) purchase and protect critically threatened rainforest in Borneo.

If you’€™ve never heard of the WLT, it’€™s a charity focused on rainforest conservation with over 20 years of experience carrying out successful environmental projects.

Sir David Attenborough said: €œThe money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of.

Each expert troop around the world will share pics, vids and experiences of their canopy camps on social media and on The Big Canopy Campout website. They’€™ll be monitored from dusk until dawn, helping us to learn about the unique life and environment of every forest.

Get involved!

Now, we can’€™t let all the pros have all the fun, can we? The Big Canopy Campout is calling out to YOU to get involved! It wants YOU to join in and celebrate rainforests and help protect the canopy through adventure!

Chances are, you may not have the skills, experience or equipment needed to rig a tent in the treetops (if you do, then climb away!). But you can still set-up camp on the ground, whether it’s in woodland, or in your own back garden with your family or buddies. You might not be treated to the same awe-inspiring views from the floor, but the experience will be just as exciting!

As the event website explains, it doesn’t matter where you end up camping, but it would be great if it was somewhere with a story; somewhere perfectly picturesque and where you’re surrounded by forest life.

If you like, you can fundraise for The Big Canopy Campout“ or, just sharing your experiences on social media using the hashtag #TheBigCanopyCampout will help to spread the word and raise much-needed awareness about this awesome cause!

The Go Ape tribe will certainly be joining in the fun in any way we can. We spend most of our time in the canopy; and although we’€™re pros (if we do say so ourselves) at treetop obstacle courses, we€’re not as skilled at pitching up a tent in the treetops. So, we think we’€™ll be setting up base on the forest floor!

Up for it? Of course you are! Join like-minded adventurists across the globe, all united by their shared love of forests! We hope to see you in the trees (or in amidst the trees) very soon!

How are those stories coming along?

KIds Writing Competition
Been on any awesome adventures recently? If you’€™re a mini Tarzan aged 4-12, then we want to hear all about them!

Maybe you built your first-ever forest den, held a campout in your back garden with your best buddies, or found fossils on a local beach. Perhaps you tried rock climbing for the very first time, hiked to a peak with your parents, or discovered treasure during a geocache trip.

Small or big, scary or exciting (or both), we’€™re asking you to help spread the love for adventure by sharing your story with us and the world!

Your story can be anywhere from 100 to 500 words. Share as many details as you can! What time did you get up? What was the weather like on the day? How were you feeling before the adventure? What did your parents say when you conquered the activity?

The more info, the better, as it’€™ll help us to feel how you were feeling during your adventure. It’€™ll help us to relive it!

Can’€™t think of an inspiring adventure off the top of your head? Make one up! Get those creative juices flowing and write about an awesome adventure that you’€™d love to go on in the future, or a story about an adventure someone you know has embarked on. Ask your parents or grandparents a€“ they may be able to tell you a tale or two!

There are no rules to this competition a the only thing we ask is for your stories to be as adventure-filled as possible. We want to read stories that, by the end, will leave us itching to go on an adventure of our own!

As well as helping to inspire the world to live life more adventurously, you’ll be in with a chance of winning some awesome prizes. We’€™re giving away heaps of adventure books, but also, lucky winners will get the chance to clamber into the canopy to take on one of our tree-mendous Tree Top Junior courses! They won’t be alone, though: they get to choose whether they take their school tribe, or their best buddies for a birthday bash like no other!

The competition closes at midnight, 22nd June. You can submit your entry through a form on the website, or by scanning a copy and sending it to [email protected] with the subject line €’Writing competition’

80 year old tackles Rivington!

80 Year Old Silverback Bill Rivington
Want to hear a story that’ll inspire and motivate you? A story that’ll make you want to rise up from your seat and applaud endlessly?

Here we go, then…

Several weeks back, we had the privilege of welcoming Bill to Go Ape in Rivington. Bill’s wife had arranged a surprise trip into the treetops for Bill’s birthday. Not any old birthday, though…his 80th birthday!

They say you’re only as old as the age you feel and Bill certainly proved that point as he swung from tree to tree, tackling our sky-high obstacles in a Tarzan style. The silverback wasn’t alone in the canopy, though: as soon as Bill’s family heard about the surprise, they wanted in on the adventure. And who can blame them?

The family arrived at the forest as a 22-strong tribe, which included Bill and his wife, their four children, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and four in-laws (*breathe*)!

Now that’s a tribe and a half!

After Bill and ten of his family completed the course, they toasted their adventure by tucking into a well-deserved picnic and drinks.

Bill said: “Everyone enjoyed it, we had a good laugh and it will be a good talking point at future family gatherings.

“The staff were very good and the safety equipment easy to use, with simple instructions.”

We pondered whether Bill would ever take to the trees again – he said: “I would do it again no problem.” That’s what we like to hear!

Our hats are off to Bill, who has proven that age is just a number and that anyone can live life adventurously! Check out adventures here!

#MayTheGamesBegin it’s a wrap Tribe!

May Games

Sometimes the routine of everyday life needs a bit of a shake-up and, here at Go Ape, we feel there’s no better way to do this than to set yourself a little challenge or two and have a good long laugh while doing it.

After all, if we didn’t step out of our comfort zone now and again, we’d hardly be swinging through the treetops with the wind in our hair – we’€™d probably just be hanging there, wishing someone would give us a push! That’€™s why this May we decided to sound the jungle drums and test our loyal and fun-loving tribe with a series of challenges, designed to weed out any treetop talents they might be hiding or secret simian skills they might possess.

Our #MayTheGamesBegin competition saw us set our instructors a brand new challenge each week as well as offer our extended tribe the opportunity to outshine them by sharing a video of their skills on our social channels. As we suspected, you cheeky monkeys tackled each week’€™s challenge with smiles on your faces and we have to say, we’€™ve never been more impressed!

Here’s some of the impressive entries from the Tribe!

Who would have thought our instructors’ tree-hugging capabilities could so closely compete with the magnificent koala? Or that our tribe could so delicately peel bananas with their dextrous feet? We should have known there would be some impressive yoga poses, held in the treetops with ease and, of course, one could hardly call themselves a member of the Go Ape tribe without at least attempting to roll a banana down their face and into their mouths!

Our whole ethos at Go Ape is centred around challenging yourself, embracing new activities and leading an adventurous lifestyle. Whether you’€™re hitting the high ropes for the first time or setting yourself the goal of letting out the loudest Tarzan cry as you tackle the zip line, there’€™s nothing more exhilarating than seeing what you are capable of at our Go Ape courses.

With 61 ways to Go Ape across the UK and 31 locations at which to do so, you’€™re bound to find something that will put you to the test! Who knows, you might even uncover a secret talent you never knew you had!

Thanks to everyone who stepped up to the plate and gave our challenges their best shot – you made us laugh, you made us cry (with laughter) and you€’ve shown us that the Go Ape tribe is one talented bunch!

Don’€™t forget to keep on challenging yourself – see you at your next visit, book it here!
