Head to the trees for The Big Canopy Campout!

Big Canopy Campout Blog
Adventurists, explorers, climbers, Go Ape-rs’€ anyone who (like us) shares a burning passion for the wonderful wild world a€“ put the 24th of June in your diaries.

Why? Because it’€™s The Big Canopy Campout!

On the eve of the 24th, canopy and climbing communities across the world will unite to spend the night pitched-up in the treetops, underneath the stars (our idea of heaven). The campout will raise money to help the World Land Trust (WLT) purchase and protect critically threatened rainforest in Borneo.

If you’€™ve never heard of the WLT, it’€™s a charity focused on rainforest conservation with over 20 years of experience carrying out successful environmental projects.

Sir David Attenborough said: €œThe money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of.

Each expert troop around the world will share pics, vids and experiences of their canopy camps on social media and on The Big Canopy Campout website. They’€™ll be monitored from dusk until dawn, helping us to learn about the unique life and environment of every forest.

Get involved!

Now, we can’€™t let all the pros have all the fun, can we? The Big Canopy Campout is calling out to YOU to get involved! It wants YOU to join in and celebrate rainforests and help protect the canopy through adventure!

Chances are, you may not have the skills, experience or equipment needed to rig a tent in the treetops (if you do, then climb away!). But you can still set-up camp on the ground, whether it’s in woodland, or in your own back garden with your family or buddies. You might not be treated to the same awe-inspiring views from the floor, but the experience will be just as exciting!

As the event website explains, it doesn’t matter where you end up camping, but it would be great if it was somewhere with a story; somewhere perfectly picturesque and where you’re surrounded by forest life.

If you like, you can fundraise for The Big Canopy Campout“ or, just sharing your experiences on social media using the hashtag #TheBigCanopyCampout will help to spread the word and raise much-needed awareness about this awesome cause!

The Go Ape tribe will certainly be joining in the fun in any way we can. We spend most of our time in the canopy; and although we’€™re pros (if we do say so ourselves) at treetop obstacle courses, we€’re not as skilled at pitching up a tent in the treetops. So, we think we’€™ll be setting up base on the forest floor!

Up for it? Of course you are! Join like-minded adventurists across the globe, all united by their shared love of forests! We hope to see you in the trees (or in amidst the trees) very soon!

An adventurous gift for the daredevil in your life!

Go Ape Gift Vouchers this Christmas

Do you know someone who grabs life by the horns, lives every day to its very fullest and embraces any adventure or challenge that’s thrown their way?

If you do and their birthday’s coming up we’ve got the perfect present idea: give them the gift of adventure!A box of choccies last a couple of days (or a couple of hours if you’re anything like us), a pair of socks lasts a year and a book will be read in a week.

But the gift of adventure will create memories that’ll last a lifetime!Go Ape vouchersWe’re big believers in gifting memories, not things, which is why we offer Go Ape vouchers for four of our adventures!

Think the self-confessed daredevil in your life will enjoy monkeying around in the treetops? If so, you could treat them to a Tree Top Adventure, or a Tree Top Junior if they’re a mini Tarzan. The courses will have them climbing nets, crawling through tunnels, wobbling across bridges and whizzing through the air on zip wires!

Zip Trekking Adventure

Speaking of zip wires, if the birthday boy or girl lives near The Lakes (or wouldn’t mind travelling there), you could treat them to our one-of-a-kind Zip Trekking Adventure! No other obstacles just zip, after zip, after zip, after zip (seven in total, in fact).

We’ve basically made human flight possible with this sky-high adventure, which covers a whopping 3km!

For a more down-to-earth activity, there’s our Forest Segway Experience, which is a good alternative if the gift has already tested their Tarzan skills in the trees. On a Segway, they’ll get to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of the forest in a totally unique way, as they roll over simple pathways as well as more testing trails.

Gift vouchers can be used at any of our 31 locations across the UK and are valid for a year. If you want, you can load the card with the amount of your choice, so that the recipient can pick their own activity.

Our vouchers can also be used to buy Go Ape gear. From branded tees, beanies and hoodies to handy lanyards and water bottles, our clothing and accessories are available to browse and buy from the on-site Go Ape cabin.

A Go Ape voucher is a gift the daredevil in your life will use and cherish. They won’t need to pull their pretend ‘I love it!’ face when they open the envelope, because they actually will!

You can expect to earn mega brownie points, and the added bonus? There’s no wrapping involved!

Striking the balance: The workings of a Segway

Group Segway

At first glance, Segways might not seem all that extraordinary, with some people describing them as mere ‘glorified scooters.’ But in actual fact, Segways are ingenious pieces of kit and a lot of science goes into developing them.

Packed away in the base, hidden from view, are clever computers, sophisticated sensors and smart motors which keep the Segway upright when it’s switched on. As for the controls and navigation, well, that’s down to you…the rider!

Successfully operating a Segway involves mastering the art of balance tightrope walkers do it, ballerinas do it; and if you’ve ever embarked on a Tree Top Adventure at Go Ape, you’ve had to do it! As the saying goes, it’s simple once you know how!

Lean forward (not too much, now) and the clever gyroscopic sensors within the Segway pick up changes in pitch angle and, as a result, move the wheels forward to maintain balance. The same goes if you need to reverse; i.e., if you overshot a forest trail at Go Ape and find yourself a little too close to a tree (*gulp*)!

Of course, as well as going backwards and forwards, you’ll want to navigate left and right which is done by moving the handlebar in the desired direction. When travelling forward, leaning forward will pick up the pace and if you start going a bit too fast for your liking, just lean back! Segway with Go Ape!

Now you know all about the tech behind Segways, do you fancy having a go on one? If the answer’s ‘yes,’ then why not pay a visit to Go Ape for a totally unique, forest-themed Segway adventure?

Go Ape Segway Experience

When it comes to cruising around on a self-balancing Segway, there really is no better setting than in the heart of a beautiful forest. Immersed in a sea of green, you’ll weave your way in and out of the trees with your tribe, listening to the birds chirping, breathing in that fresh forest air while watching numerous species of wildlife go about their merry way.

A Forest Segway experience is a fun-for-all activity. If you aren’t a fan of heights, or have swung with us so many times you’ve lost count, it provides a good alternative to a Tree Top Adventure (though, we also recommend facing up to your fears by heading into the canopy).

Or, you might choose to treat yourself and your tribe to the ultimate Go Ape day out by combining both adventures go on, you deserve it!Worried you won’t be able to balance? Worry no more! Before we let you roam free in the forest, a skilled member of the Go Ape tribe will teach you the tricks and make sure you’ve nailed the controls.

A Segway experience costs just £35 for 60 minutes, and is the perfect chance to put your feet up and explore the wonders of the forest in a fun and totally unique way!

Carry on…bonding!

Trees for Cities and Go Ape

Why is it that the Easter holidays and May Day Bank Holiday always seem to be over in a flash?

Well do not fear we have Spring Bank Holiday and the Summer Holidays just on the horizon ….

One day you’re all kicking back in the garden, enjoying a hot cross bun or two (or three); the next you’re sat at your desk, your kids are back at school, and you’re checking your calendar to count the weeks until the summer hols.

Easter and the early May Bank Holiday may be over, but the opportunity to bond with your family isn’t! Chances are, you all got up to some fun things during the break…well, there’s no reason why the fun should stop! In fact, having some fun activities in the pipeline will help to lessen the blow of being back in the office or the classroom.

Spring’s here and the evenings are getting lighter by the day so get out there and make the most of it!

Autumn Adventures at Go Ape

Maybe you weren’t able to hang out with your family that much this Easter. Well, even more reason to start planning some awesome adventures for you to bond over. With a little inspiration from the National Trust website, here are eight springtime family adventure ideas which do not need a holiday to take advantage of:

1. Take a trip to the forest, find the best climbing tree, and appreciate the view from way up high (just don’t forget to hold on tight).
2. Go for a stroll in the countryside, and see who can spot the most newborn baby lambs.
3. Be brave and take a dip in the sea hold hands and all run in together. The UK boasts some truly beautiful beaches; so after your swim, you can spend an afternoon building sandcastles and enjoying ice cream.
4. If it’s a windy day at the beach, bring a kite, and watch it dance and twirl in the breeze (before crash-landing into the sand).
5. Set off at dusk and spend an evening stargazing. Pick a spot with limited light pollution, and look out for shooting stars.
6. Gather together some paper and crayons and sketch some pictures of the springtime blooms. If you have flowers (like daffodils) growing in your garden, why not try pressing them into your artwork?
7. Ready, steady, slow! Ask a few snails if they wouldn’t mind taking part in a race. Placing a piece of lettuce at the finish line will encourage them to keep moving and in the right direction.
8. Unleash your inner Tarzans in the treetops at Go Ape! The ultimate in family bonding, a Tree Top Adventure will see you teaming up to tackle a whole host of sky-high obstacles. You’ll crawl through bridges, swing on stirrups, leap into nets and whizz through the air via zip wire!

With 31 locations across the UK, there’s bound to be a Go Ape near you. Book today, and give you and your family something to look forward to.
