#TakeTheFirstStep: Times ticking…

Take the First Step - Go Ape

Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock

Hear that? That’s the sound of the clock ticking down to the end of summer! We’re at the end of August, meaning autumn is just around the corner.

Were sure you’ve heard about our summertime campaign, #TakeTheFirstStep. Were encouraging people to leave their comfort zones behind, break out of the claustrophobic confines of sensible Britain and have some fun, a lot of fun!

All journeys begin with a single step, and that’s why we want you to take the first step to leading a more adventurous life!

Why? we hear you ask. Well, a life lived adventurously is a life more fulfilled! So long as you possess a can-do attitude and a willingness to embrace the unknown, the world is your oyster so go explore it!

Perhaps you’re a notorious putter-offer you’re always saying, Ill do that next month/next year/one day/when I’ve got time. You made a bucket list a few years ago but you haven’t got round to ticking a single thing off. You’ve got big dreams for the future but you haven’t taken any steps to make those dreams turn into a reality. The only thing stopping you is you!

Life’s too short for it to be put on hold!

Want to climb a mountain? Start making plans today. Want to try a new sport? Research local clubs on your lunch break. Want to go traveling around Asia for a month? Arrange a meeting with your boss to see if it’s possible. Adventure is waiting; you just need to take that first step!

Adventure is all about opening yourself up to new experiences. It’s about trying everything once and not being afraid to give something a go just because it involves risk. Adventure is all about meeting new people, learning new skills and discovering your true potential.

We read a quote the other day and it struck a chord. It was from French author and Nobel Prize winner André Gide, and read:

It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves, in finding themselves.

If you need any more convincing, science shows that being adventurous makes you happier! Rich Walker, a psychologist, studied 30,000 event memories and 500 diary entries, discovering that people who engage in a variety of experiences are more likely to retain positive emotions and suppress negative emotions. There we have it: conclusive proof that adventure is the key to happiness!

Here’s an idea for your next adventure: swinging through the tree tops at Go Ape! We want you to unleash your inner Tarzan as you climb ropes, wobble across bridges, clamber through tunnels and leap from sky-high platforms.

With over 30 locations across the UK, all set in stunning parks and forests, there’s bound to be a Go Ape near you! Book a Go Ape Adventure now!

“Behind the Trees” of our new TV Advert

Go Ape filming TV advert

If you hadn’t already seen, we released a national TV campaign on the 7th July.

We’re encouraging all the men, women and beasts of the UK to #TakeTheFirstStep and visit Go Ape for the very first time. While you can now see the 30 second TV ad in all of it’s glory, there was a lot of work going on off-camera that made it happen. Here’s the “behind the trees” scoop from our first ever TV advert.

When: 24th-25th May 2016

Where: Go Ape Leeds Castle

Who: 13 members of the public, 16 Go Ape staff, 4 actors and a hairy herd of directors.

Preparation for the day

After 14 years of encouraging people to live life adventurously, the advert had a lot to live up to. In order to film this TV campaign, we needed genuine reactions of people experiencing our classic Tree Top Adventure for the very first time. The hunt was afoot…

Naturally, we called on the most charismatic, fun-loving explorers we knew – the general public! Weeks before shooting, we sent out a message via email, social and the Go Ape website searching for members of the public who have never “gone ape.” We then invited a selection of bushy-tailed newbies up into the trees and filmed them on their first ever Tree Top Adventures.

On the day (queue 2 days of monkeying around on camera)

At 7am on a Tuesday morning in late-May we set off to start filming our very first TV advert. Go Ape at Leeds Castle was our location of choice. The course was closed so we could give our enthusiastic new members of the Tribe exclusive use of the course.

Before being let loose in the trees everyone had to complete a safety brief led by one of our instructors. At this time of the morning, before the sun had really woken up, we saw a lot of makeshift ways of keeping warm including lunges, jump squats, and a unique version of the shuffle.

Once our Tribe were up in the trees, however, nothing could stop them and the fun could really begin. Every single person we recorded on the day had never been to Go Ape before. The reactions we captured were real and raw (while others were just down right funny).

While shots like these were easily captured from the ground (or occasionally a nearby tree), others were a bit trickier to capture. In order to get the beautiful views of the tree-tops and really appreciate the landscapes our wind-in-your-face zip-wires travel over, we needed to go above and beyond – literally. The breath-taking shot of the zip wire crossing over the field was taken using a drone, and allowed us to really capture the wow-factor of our famous zips. Look out the final drone shot in the #TakeTheFirstStep advert.

We want to inspire you to #TakeTheFirstStep

All this hard work combined to make, what we think is, one tree-rific TV advert. Keep an eye out for our ad on the telly over the 6 weeks of summer and follow the #TakeTheFirstStep campaign on our social media channels. Or if you just can’t wait, check out the below:

We’re encouraging people to take their first steps by giving away free tree-time via Twitter and Facebook. Get involved and tell us who you would love to #TakeTheFirstStep with, and live life adventurously together!

#TakeTheFirstStep: one step at a time

Take the First Step Go Ape

This summer, we’ve made it our mission to inspire you, yes, you! to take the first step towards leading a happier, healthier and more fulfilled life.

And there’s only one way you can do that: by getting out there and embracing adventure!

One step at a time

We’ll be the first ones to admit that our Tree Top Adventure courses seem a little scary to start. In fact, most members of the tribe will tell you they had the jitters the very first time they climbed the rope ladder to Platform 1!

But, it would be wrong to label our courses extreme, or to say that they’re for daredevils or thrill-seekers only. A Tree Top Adventure is for everyone! Provided you’re reasonably fit and healthy, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a few hours of canopy exploring and trailblazing!

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to swing with us (and your inner Tarzan is dying to be released), but something’s always held you back, a fear of heights, maybe? Well, Go Ape prides itself on helping people to overcome their fear of heights you just need to be ready to take the first step.

If you embark on a Tree Top Adventure, that ‘first step’ will take place on the rope ladder leading to Platform 1. Take it one step at a time: you can be as slow as you like (within reason, of course). If you want to stop for a breather every few steps, that’s absolutely fine!

Trust us when we say, getting yourself up there is the trickiest bit (mentally, anyway).

Once you’re in the tree-tops, you’ll start to relax and realise how much fun it is up there! And besides, the bridges, tunnels, nets and swings will be welcome distractions from the fact you’re suspended 30+ feet in the air!

Woodchip Landing at Go ApeAnd here’s the thing: on a Tree Top Adventure, you pick your route. As you make your way through the course, you can choose to take-on easier obstacles, or (if you’re feeling brave) trickier ones. You might select ‘beginner mode’ to start and then crank it up to advanced as you go along, it’s up to you.

If you stick to the more simple routes the whole way round, that’s absolutely fine. Kudos to you for facing your fear head-on, clambering up into the tree-tops and conquering a Tree Top Adventure!

Few things compare to that “I’ve done it!” mini-fist-pump-feeling you get as you whizz down the final zip wire, landing (gracefully or not so gracefully) in a soft pile of woodchip. We promise you’ll enjoy your tree-top time so much, you’ll be wanting to book another Go Ape adventure!

A happier, more adventurous you is just around the corner, are you ready to take that first step?

Make Your Summer Checklist

Make a Summer Checklist

Have you made your summer checklist yet? No? Well, why not!?

With summer in full swing and the sun finally making an appearance (hurrah!), there couldn’t be a better time to get out there and embrace adventure!

There’s so much to see, do and experience here in the UK, that you might be wondering where to begin. If so, let Go Ape help! Whether you’re looking for adventures for one, two, or a big group (or a mix of all three), here are some fun ideas to get you started. Pen and paper at the ready…

Back to the simple life you go…pitch up, switch off (all tech), and spend some quality time with your loved ones singing songs under a star-studded sky. Check out this Guardian list of top campsites for some inspiration.

Go to the beach

As a favourite British pastime, a trip to the beach is a must this summer! Build sand castles with your little ones, jump over waves in the sea, explore hidden coves, and catch some crabs in the rockpools! Want to try something a little different? Head to the Jurassic Coast, pick up some hammers, and find yourself some fossils!

Get fit

Swap gym benches for park benches and get fit…outdoors! From bootcamps to group yoga and one-on-one personal training sessions, outdoor fitness classes have really taken off in the past few years and there’s bound to be one near you!

Row, row, row your boat

…gently down the river! Round-up the tribe and head out on a rowing boat for a few hours. Pack a picnic and take it in turns to row as you all tuck into some tasty homemade sarnies! If you want to extend your on-water adventure, why not hire a narrowboat and spend the weekend cruising canals with your pals?

P-p-p-pick up a paddle

A relatively new craze in the UK, stand up paddle boarding (SUP for short) is mega fun and a great way to explore the country’s network of waterways. Don’t be fooled by how easy it looks; there’s definitely a knack to it! To find out where you can SUP, take a look at the British Stand Up Paddle Association website.

Go 007

Take your little ones on a James Bond-themed adventure to discover some of the National Trust’s top-secret spots. In the houses and grounds you’ll unearth everything from twisted tunnels and secret doors to magical caves and mysterious mazes.

Go Ape!

Soaring through the air, wind in your face, with your arms stretched wide – sounds pretty dreamy, huh? Well, that’s exactly what you’ll be able to experience if you come and hang with us at Go Ape! Our Tree Top Adventures are set high up in the forest’s canopy and include a whole host of awesome obstacles, from wobbly bridges and tunnels to swings and zip wires!

This summer we want you to #TakeTheFirstStep, don’t be held back be the same old excuses and live life adventurously with us.

We hope we’ve given you inspiration for activities to include on your summer checklist! So the next time you wake up on a Saturday morning pondering “what shall I do today?” you’ll know where to look!

(Psst…if you have any recommendations for summer adventures you’d think we’d enjoy, do let us know!)
