The Adventure Fund In action: Enduro World Series

Beck Jordan Blog
Our Instructors are an adventurous bunch which is why we offer an adventure fund for our staff that are looking to live life more adventurously. This year, one of our instructors at Go Ape Bedgebury, Becky Jordan, decided to take on the Enduro World Series.
Here’s what she had to say …

“Following previous funding from the Adventure Fund last year for my Mountain Bike Racing I decided to go all out this year and enter a qualifying round for the Enduro World Series that was being held at Dyfi Forest in Wales on the 20th-21st May.

The Adventure Fund gave me the funds that I needed in order to enter the race and to register with the EWS for the points that I would need to be eligible for the 2018 Enduro World series next year which was the most amazing opportunity.

It is safe to say that it is the hardest event I have ever done in my life. The race route was 52km long with 1800m worth of climbing. Including 5 stages of fast and technical downhill that tested my skills on a bike to the absolute max! With several crashes during practice day on Saturday I was very close to giving up on it all.

I knew how disappointed in myself I would be if I did that. So I got up on the Sunday morning for race day and was at the top of the hill for 09:30am, ready for the race start at 10:00am.

Exactly 5 hours and 7minutes later with 5 clean stage runs under my belt I crossed the finish line in second place in the Senior Women’s category. I cannot tell you how happy and shocked I was all at the same time! Not only did this mean that I had come second place in the Enduro Welsh Open, but I had also qualified for the points that I needed to have the opportunity to enter the Enduro World Series in 2018!

This opportunity would not have been possible without the support of the Adventure Fund to get me to this event and I am extremely grateful to you!  Who knows what the next few months will hold but I am well on my way to living the dream!”

Well done Becky an amazing achievement!

You have your badges but do you have your certificate?!

High Ropes for Kids
Are you one of almost half a million youngsters in the UK who’€™s a member of the Scout Association?

We’€™re huge fans of the SA, because it ties in nicely with what we do,€“ and what we believe in€“ here at Go Ape. Its aim is to provide €œfun, adventure and skills for life and give young people the opportunity to enjoy new adventures, experience outdoors and take part in a range of creative, community and international activities, interact with others, make new friends, gain confidence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.€ Hear, hear!

The SA has a huge, positive impact on the lives of kids. In fact, a study from Edinburgh and Glasgow university researchers last year found that people who were in scouts or guides in childhood have better mental health in later life.

Among the 10,000 people studied, ex-members were 15% less likely to suffer anxiety or mood disorders at the age of 50. That’€™s the great outdoors and adventure working their magic!

Building those badges

Now we’€™re sure you have an impressive collection of badges, ranging from core badges to those you earn through certain activities. Perhaps you earned your Astronomer Activity Badge after making a model of the solar system; or maybe you planned, served and cleared away a two-course meal for at least two people, leading you to receive a Chef Activity Badge!

As you know, there are loads of badges to collect and impress your friends with, and that’€™s what makes scouting so exciting. It encourages you to keep on looking for adventures to embark on and activities to complete. It encourages you to live life adventurously, which as you know, is what we’€™re all about!

Get your certificate

So, your badge collection is pretty impressive and it’€™s growing all the time, but do you have a certificate? More specifically, a Go Ape certificate!?

Monkey around in the treetops at Go Ape and you’ll be awarded a special certificate with your name written across the front of it! It’™ll be something you can cherish forever and ever; a memento of your time spent with us!

Pin it to a noticeboard, stick it to your fridge, place it on your mantelpiece,“ that certificate is proof that you are full of adventurous spirit and that you conquered a sky-high obstacle course at Go Ape!

As you whoosh down that final zip wire and head back to the hut, your Go Ape certificate will be ready and waiting for you. Make sure you put it somewhere extra safe on the journey home so that it doesn’t crease and crinkle!

How are those stories coming along?

Been on any awesome adventures recently? If you’€™re a mini Tarzan aged 4-12, then we want to hear all about them!

Maybe you built your first-ever forest den, held a campout in your back garden with your best buddies, or found fossils on a local beach. Perhaps you tried rock climbing for the very first time, hiked to a peak with your parents, or discovered treasure during a geocache trip.

Small or big, scary or exciting (or both), we’€™re asking you to help spread the love for adventure by sharing your story with us and the world!

Your story can be anywhere from 100 to 500 words. Share as many details as you can! What time did you get up? What was the weather like on the day? How were you feeling before the adventure? What did your parents say when you conquered the activity?

The more info, the better, as it’€™ll help us to feel how you were feeling during your adventure. It’€™ll help us to relive it!

Can’€™t think of an inspiring adventure off the top of your head? Make one up! Get those creative juices flowing and write about an awesome adventure that you’€™d love to go on in the future, or a story about an adventure someone you know has embarked on. Ask your parents or grandparents a€“ they may be able to tell you a tale or two!

There are no rules to this competition a the only thing we ask is for your stories to be as adventure-filled as possible. We want to read stories that, by the end, will leave us itching to go on an adventure of our own!

As well as helping to inspire the world to live life more adventurously, you’ll be in with a chance of winning some awesome prizes. We’€™re giving away heaps of adventure books, but also, lucky winners will get the chance to clamber into the canopy to take on one of our tree-mendous Tree Top Junior courses! They won’t be alone, though: they get to choose whether they take their school tribe, or their best buddies for a birthday bash like no other!

The competition closes at midnight, 22nd June. You can submit your entry through a form on the website, or by scanning a copy and sending it to [email protected] with the subject line €’Writing competition’

Go Ape’s motto has always been the same ever since that sunny day back in 2001 when Tris and Becs opened the leafy forest doors to our very first course.

Do you know what that motto is?

Creating adventures, encouraging others to live life more adventurously

Ten points if you got it!

It’s our motto and mission to encourage the world (yes, the world) to live life more adventurously through our forest-themed activities. Whether you’re rolling around on a bunch of Segways or swinging from tree to tree, we want to open your minds and eyes to the wonderfully exciting world of outdoor adventure.

Now, it’s your turn to inspire:

Mini Tarzans, we’ve a favour to ask. We think we’re doing a pretty good job of inspiring adventure (if we say so ourselves), but we want you to help us out and inspire others, too!

This is a call for all kids aged 4-12! Monkeys, we want you to pen a story about an awesome adventure you’ve had. The story needs to be 100-500 words and there are no rules whatsoever, as long as it’s really adventurous and has the potential to inspire the Go Ape Tribe and anyone else who reads it!

It could be real-life story or completely made up, it’s your choice. It just needs to be adventure-filled. So get those creative juices flowing and let your imagination run wild!

What’s in it for you? Well, quite a lot actually! If you win, you can choose from a school trip for your whole class or a treetop party for you and your pri-mates! Oh, we’re also going to be giving away stacks of adventure books!

We’ll be awarding these awesome prizes to nine lucky winners, in categories including best fiction author, best non-fiction author, best character, and best use of language. Chief Gorillas Tris and Becs will also be picking their favourite entry.

Already have an idea of what you’re going to write? Don’t wait around as time’s ticking! You’ve got until midnight, 22nd June to submit your entry, either through a form on our website here or by scanning a paper copy to [email protected], with the subject line ‘Writing competition’.

Good luck to all you little monkeys taking part and thanks for helping the Go Ape Tribe to inspire adventure among the masses!
