Striking the balance: The workings of a Segway

Group Segway

At first glance, Segways might not seem all that extraordinary, with some people describing them as mere ‘glorified scooters.’ But in actual fact, Segways are ingenious pieces of kit and a lot of science goes into developing them.

Packed away in the base, hidden from view, are clever computers, sophisticated sensors and smart motors which keep the Segway upright when it’s switched on. As for the controls and navigation, well, that’s down to you…the rider!

Successfully operating a Segway involves mastering the art of balance tightrope walkers do it, ballerinas do it; and if you’ve ever embarked on a Tree Top Adventure at Go Ape, you’ve had to do it! As the saying goes, it’s simple once you know how!

Lean forward (not too much, now) and the clever gyroscopic sensors within the Segway pick up changes in pitch angle and, as a result, move the wheels forward to maintain balance. The same goes if you need to reverse; i.e., if you overshot a forest trail at Go Ape and find yourself a little too close to a tree (*gulp*)!

Of course, as well as going backwards and forwards, you’ll want to navigate left and right which is done by moving the handlebar in the desired direction. When travelling forward, leaning forward will pick up the pace and if you start going a bit too fast for your liking, just lean back! Segway with Go Ape!

Now you know all about the tech behind Segways, do you fancy having a go on one? If the answer’s ‘yes,’ then why not pay a visit to Go Ape for a totally unique, forest-themed Segway adventure?

Go Ape Segway Experience

When it comes to cruising around on a self-balancing Segway, there really is no better setting than in the heart of a beautiful forest. Immersed in a sea of green, you’ll weave your way in and out of the trees with your tribe, listening to the birds chirping, breathing in that fresh forest air while watching numerous species of wildlife go about their merry way.

A Forest Segway experience is a fun-for-all activity. If you aren’t a fan of heights, or have swung with us so many times you’ve lost count, it provides a good alternative to a Tree Top Adventure (though, we also recommend facing up to your fears by heading into the canopy).

Or, you might choose to treat yourself and your tribe to the ultimate Go Ape day out by combining both adventures go on, you deserve it!Worried you won’t be able to balance? Worry no more! Before we let you roam free in the forest, a skilled member of the Go Ape tribe will teach you the tricks and make sure you’ve nailed the controls.

A Segway experience costs just £35 for 60 minutes, and is the perfect chance to put your feet up and explore the wonders of the forest in a fun and totally unique way!

Write a list

A bank holiday means you have 50% more time to do the things you’ve been nagging yourself to do, but haven’t got around to. Practice your chest-pounding skills‚ okay, maybe that one’s just us…

Adrenaline rush? Yes please!

Zip Adrenaline

The body works in wonderful (and mysterious) ways, don’t you think?

Take adrenaline, for example. This hormone plays a key role in our so-called fight-or-flight responses it’s pumped around our bodies whenever we’re put in pulse-racing situations.

Remember how the last time you did something ‘scary’ your palms started to sweat? Remember how your knees wobbled, your teeth chattered, and your stomach felt like it was being churned at full speed inside a washing machine?

But can you also remember how you felt overcoming that scary thing? How you felt that burst of energy travel throughout your entire body, from your head down your toes? How you started to shiver, even though you weren’t cold? All of these things you felt are down to adrenaline!

Adrenaline is that surge of energy that increases our heart rate and blood pressure, and heightens our senses. And you might not know this, but although the hormone is released in response to stressful situations, adrenaline rushes can actually be good for us.

Adrenaline can boost alertness and awareness, and improve memory and cognitive function. It can also block feelings of pain, help out our immune system and give us increased strength for the duration of the ‘rush’!

Of course, to experience an adrenaline rush, you need to leave the confines of your comfort zone and step out into the unknown. Besides, comfort zones are restrictive and boring they stop us from living life adventurously (which is our very motto). Boo!

So, are you ready to show your daring side? You don’t have to embark on something super crazy just yet; just something that will get your heart rate climbing. Something that will excite you and leave you wanting more!

Before you go jumping off a platform with a bungee cord wrapped around your ankles, why not jump off a platform and into a giant net at Go Ape!?

Our Tree Top Adventure is guaranteed to get your pulse racing for a number of reasons. One of which is that the course is set high in the canopy (if you didn’t gather already),
which certainly gives the obstacles that extra ‘edge.’ Another reason is that you’ll come across some truly testing obstacles along the way some will stop you in your tracks and make you ponder, “How am I going to do this!?”

Go Ape Zip LineYour courage will be put to the test when crossing obstacles like our Tightrope no hands! Then of course there’s our infamous Tarzan Swing, where you have to muster up the courage to leap into the air! It may take a few seconds, it may take a minute just don’t forget to holler!

Oh, and you’re bound to feel an adrenaline rush as you whizz through the air on our zip wires, which complete each part of the course! It feels like you’re flying that is, of course, until you land (gracefully or not-so-gracefully) in a soft pile of squidgy wood chip!

So, what are you waiting for? Come and experience the ultimate adrenaline rush at Go Ape!

Like a bit of air time?

Why not check out Air Space! It’s the UK’s ultimate trampoline park with locations in Stevenage, Wolverhampton and East Kilbride, boasting 100’s of trampolines to freejump as well as basketball, dodgeball and more.

Keeping up with…Go Ape!

Students Offers

Now, as you probably know, the Go Ape tribe are all about the great outdoors. We like to spend as much time as possible outside, away from the confines of walls and ceilings, totally surrounded by nature.

Those who work on our courses are lucky to be outside mostly all day long, while our office-based BananaHQ tribe find any excuse to stretch their legs in the great outdoors, swinging by our courses on a regular basis.

In the past, we’ve preached about disconnecting from tech, and reconnecting with the wonderful, natural world around us. But at the same time, we know how important tech is for keeping in touch with family and friends, and staying up-to-date with all that’s going on in the world. We don’t think tech is the devil, we just think it’s important to take breaks and strike a healthy balance!

Besides, if we didn’t have tech, just how would our lovely customers keep up with what’s going on in our neck of the woods? We’re a busy bunch, and love sharing our most recent adventures with you – like our brand new course opening at London’s infamous Ally Pally!

Also, our social channels provide a platform for you to share your Go Ape adventures with us! We love seeing pics of your time in the treetops, and vids of you on-board our Forest Segways. And it’s great to read your feedback, too – it lets us know what we’re doing well, and where we can improve!

And the thing is, by sharing your adventures on our social channels, you’re giving us a helping hand at succeeding in our mission – which is, to encourage others to live life more adventurously! When people see pics of others swinging through the trees Tarzan-style, wearing huge smiles, all of a sudden they want to embrace the great outdoors and have a go themselves.
