It’s National Gorilla Suit Day…and we need your help!

We know that many of you will be happy to see the end of January, but the Go Ape tribe are looking forward to the 31st for another reason altogether: it’s National Gorilla Suit Day!

For you lovely folk, National Gorilla Suit Day presents the perfect opportunity to stroll around town dressed as an ape…and get away with it! If anyone raises their eyebrows (or runs away screaming), just say to them:

“Didn’t you know it’s National Gorilla Suit Day?!”

Pass on the knowledge, and hopefully next year they’ll join in and celebrate too!

Anyway, we’re actually after your help. We’ve decided it’s time to refresh our wardrobe. As you can imagine, we get through our fair share of gorilla suits. So we’ve decided to treat ourselves to some new furry finery… a gift to us, from us!

We’ve scoured the web for some new suits and have narrowed it down to five options. Your opinions, please…

Option 1

Go Ape Gorilla Costume Option 1

A classic choice, and not too different from our current clobber (though this guy does look a bit possessed, sort of like Frankenstein’s monster, don’t you think?). The question is: do we go with what we know, or mix it up a little this time…?

Option 2

Go Ape Gorilla Costume Option 2

Dressed in this neon suit, there’ll be no more blending in with the forest! And that means no more creeping up on visitors and surprising them when they least expect it (boo!). We dig pink, but we can’t imagine it staying this colour for long in the forest.

Option 3

Go Ape Gorilla Costume Option 3

Woah! What is this? A freshly-shaved gorilla? We’re sure it’d be easier navigating one of our Tree Top Adventures courses with this sleek suit on, but it lacks authenticity. It won’t be as snug as the furry alternatives either, meaning we might get chilly when swinging from tree to tree. And are we the only ones who find it kind of creepy?!

Option 4

Go Ape Gorilla Costume Option 4

Another realistic gorilla suit and we think this guy looks much more cheery than option 1! Oh-ah-ah, or oh-ah-na?

Option 5

Go Ape Gorilla Costume Option 5

Oh no! One of the Go Ape tribe members has been captured by a gorilla! We’re sure this suit will get some laughs, but that big cage on the front might not make it the most practical of options!…And there we have it five choices for Go Ape’s new gorilla suits.

Tire them out with fresh air

Half term activities for kids

Fresh air does us the world of good and we’re not just saying that because we’re purveyors of outdoor adventures!

Combined with nature, fresh air is like food for the soul. Spending time in the great outdoors boosts our physical health as well as our mental wellbeing, meaning we feel better on the inside and the outside!

You know what else fresh air is good for? Tiring out your kids! If your littluns have a seemingly limitless energy supply, a stint with Mother Nature is sure to settle them.

Well, we say that, but actually fresh air is likely to give your kids even more energy (if you thought that was possible). The science-y bit behind it is this: breathing in fresh air clears your lungs, allowing you to take deeper, longer breaths. That means more oxygen is delivered to the cells in the body, and more oxygen = more energy. It’s as simple as that.

OK, so fresh air alone might not mellow out your offspring, but combine it with some exercise in the great outdoors and that should do the trick! If you’re pondering ways to use up some of your kid’s energy, we’ve got a suggestion: Go Ape!

Kids love nothing more than to climb trees, right?

So, you can expect to earn serious mum- or dad-points if you treat them to a Tree Top Junior adventure. Climbing up into the tree-tops, they’ll get to enjoy a fun-filled hour of canopy exploring, trailblazing and obstacles.

Winter Activities for KidsThe obstacles your little tyke will take on include everything from ladders and tunnels, to tightropes and bridges. It’s a good thing our courses end with an awesome zip wire otherwise, you might find it hard convincing your little one to come down from the trees!

You’re able to join your kid in the trees if you like, but bear in mind that the course is designed for little people, so the safety line won’t be where you want it to be. If they’re happy to monkey around solo, you can watch from the forest floor, just make sure you arrive armed with a camera, so you can take lots of snaps of them in action.

As further proof, when your monkey completes the course they’ll receive a memento in the form of a Go Ape certificate, which will undoubtedly take pride of place on the kitchen fridge when you get home.

If you think your little monkey would love hanging out in the trees with us, why not book your Go Ape adventure today?

As an incentive, we’re currently offering 20% off mid-week adventures in February, but you need to book before the 10th so go, go, go!

You had me at avocado – healthy lunch recipes

healthy couscous

Trying to eat healthily this year but already find yourself teetering on the edge of that wagon? Join the club! If you’re sick of soggy salads and sad sandwiches at lunchtime, allow us to give you a little inspiration…

We asked a few members of our tribe for their favourite healthy lunch recipes – we don’t just run on bananas you know, and trust us when we say our gang needs all the nutrients and energy they can here at Banana HQ! Healthy eating isn’t a mystery; just remember to keep things natural and fresh, and that it’s all about balance – which, as it happens, is also an important skill when you’re navigating our tree tops!

Ready to liven up your lunchtime? Take a look at these tasty healthy lunch ideas…

Moroccan couscous

Stuck having your lunch al-desko? With just a few spices and dry ingredients, you can get a real taste of the exotic! Just prepare some couscous according to the packet instructions, then in a separate pan, toast a spice mix of ground cumin, ground coriander, ground cardamom and mixed spice, before adding oil, sliced red onion, red pepper and courgette. Throw in some sultanas, chickpeas and pistachios, then stir it all into the couscous with some chopped fresh mint. If you like, add grilled chicken breast for extra protein.

Loaded sweet potatoes

If you tend to crave something warm at lunchtime, this nutritious take on a jacket potato will do the trick. Sweet potatoes are packed with antioxidants, vitamin A, bet-carotene and fibre ΓÇô and they’re oh-so-tasty! Just cook a whole sweet potato for 40 minutes in the oven, then cut in half and stuff with anything you fancy. You could try cottage cheese; feta and roasted veggies; spicy chicken; tuna and red onion; or houmous and spinach.

Spicy bean burrito bowl

Arriba! Fire up your taste buds with a spicy Mexican bean bowl – so yummy you won’t even notice it’s good for you! Cook a grain of your choice (such as quinoa or bulgar wheat) then stir in chopped onion, garlic, chilli, smoked paprika and cayenne pepper. Mix through black beans, red kidney beans and sweetcorn. Divide into portions, then pile each one onto a bed of chopped iceberg lettuce. Top with salsa, chunks of avocado and a dollop of yoghurt.

Funky frittatas

Frittatas are a great lunchtime choice ΓÇô they’re cheap, versatile, easy, and you can make a few portions in one go! To make a basic frittata, cook your chosen fillings in a large, oven-proof frying pan (try chorizo and red pepper), then add 5-6 eggs beaten with milk, and cheese such as goats cheese, cheddar or feta. Cook for 10-12 mins until set, then flash under a hot grill to cook the top and turn it golden brown. Cut into three or four portions and serve with a crispy green salad.

Wholesome banana muffins

OK, we couldn’t help include one banana recipe! What can we say, we’re bananas about them! Whip up a batch of these beauties on a Sunday evening, and you’ve got lunchbox puds for the whole week. Take 250g flour (use a 50/50 mix of white and wholemeal) and combine with cinnamon, ginger and baking powder. Stir this into a mixture of three mashed bananas, two eggs, brown sugar, honey and vanilla extract, and mix until blended. Pour into muffin cases, sprinkle with oats, then bake for around 25 mins.

So there you have it! Some healthy ideas to keep you full up and fuelled up. And if you’re making a packed lunch, why not bring it to one of our forest locations to fuel a day of fun and adventure? We promise to help you work up an appetite!
